Lower Blue Lake in color

You can’t imagine the color of this lake — the most gorgeous turquoise blue, like the Caribbean. Here is the drawing from my previous post, with a bit of color added. Not quite the vivid blue of real life, but a touch of it.

Lower Blue Lake

This is Lower Blue Lake in the Sneffels Wilderness in southwestern Colorado.

I used a pigment liner in a Strathmore Visual Journal, 90# Mixed Media, which is wonderful for drawing and ink, but not so good for adding watercolor.  I’m still looking for my perfect paper to use every day for drawing, ink, and watercolor, but not a thick, expensive watercolor paper.  I have two on the way — should be here next week — I can’t wait!

Forget-Me-Not

We did a lot of hiking up in the San Juans this year. The flowers were not as prolific this year but we did capture the precious few we could. I have to thank my son and my dad for being patient with Anna and me for all the stops we had to make to take pictures.

Forget-Me-Nots are tiny flowers, only about a quarter of an inch wide and growing in clumps. Here is a study of these pretty guys.

First, the pencil drawing.

Then I inked the drawing and removed the pencil.

Finally, the watercolor. I like it but I’ll do it over again a few times to get a better feel for it.

EDiJuly 31: Something Super

I am back home in Virginia after being in Colorado for twelve days. I stayed in a beautiful house with a fabulous view….and no internet connection. It really opened my eyes how much I missed being connected, how often I check in with my favorite blogs, look at the pages I follow on Facebook, or use the net to answer simple questions or to do research. Now I know!

But I did do some drawing while I was away. This is a view from the house where we were staying and I decided it was perfect for EDiJuly 31: Something Super.

San Juan Mountains

I’m back in Colorado and as is usual I’m feeling sleeeeeeepy from the altitude. I’ve done a few sketches but nothing ready for posting yet. Meanwhile, here are a few quick photos. These grand landscapes will be a challenge to sketch and paint.
